Teenagers love to experiment with cosmetics, but ironically, the cosmetics industry is experimenting on them. An astounding 89% of ingredients in everyday products are not tested for safety.
Many products contain hormone-disrupting chemicals--just what teens don't need when their bodies are especially sensitive to miniscule hormone changes. Even worse, the cosmetics industry has no incentive to screen products for long-term safety, and the FDA has no authority to make it happen. That means we have zero assurance that what teens are smearing and spraying on their skin is safe.
This summer, EWG hopes to change that. We'll test 20 teens' blood and urine for common yet harmful cosmetic chemicals. We'll analyze the data and use the results to continue to push the FDA and industry for product testing requirements.
The biggest hurdle is the cost--it costs $121 to test one teen for one chemical, and we've targeted two dozen chemicals for investigation. We need your help to make it happen.
